Sunday, 5 October
Real Madrid v Espanyol Barcelona

Quick Summary: Real Madrid take on injury ravaged Espanyol, looking to continue their glutony of goals at the Bernabeu (11 goals in 2 games). Real struggled to see off Betis in matchday 5 but showed good form in Europe midweek to defeat Russian champions Zenit 2-1. Espanyol last outing saw them lose to bitter Catalan rivals, Barcelona, 2-1 in controversial circumstances. They will be aiming to put things right here but will have to do it without a long list of absentees including midfielders Rufete, Javi Ruiz, defenders Marc Torrejon, Jesus Mari Lacruz, Steve Finnan and striker Valdo.

Pick: Real Madrid to Win

Pick: Over 2.5 goals
Real Betis 1 - 2 Real Madrid

La Liga Round 3 (20/09 - 21/09)

Round 3 in Spain resumes with the more fancied clubs Barcelona, Real Mardrid, and Athletico Madrid not having it all their way early doors, each troubling the statisticians in the 'games lost' column. Maybe their midweek exertions in the Champions League, in which each team impressively won their respective games, will provide a platform for impressive performances in the domestic league. One of the games of Round 3 is between two early high-flyers, Espanyol against Getafe.

Matchday 2 Results
FC Barcelona 1 - 1 Real Racing Club Santander
Real Valladolid CF 2 - 1 Atletico Madrid
Sevilla FC 4 - 3 Real Sporting de Gijón
Getafe CF 0 - 0 Real Betis
Malaga CF 0 - 0 Athletic Club Bilbao
RCD Mallorca 1 - 1 CA Osasuna
RC Recreativo Huelva 0 - 1 Espanyol Barcelona
Villarreal CF 1 - 0 RC Deportivo de La Coruña
Real Madrid 4 - 3 CD Numancia
UD Almeria 2 - 2 Valencia CF

Saturday, 20th September
Espanyol Barcelona v Getafe CF

Summary: Both teams, especially Espanyol, have began their campaigns in impressive fashion as they remain undefeated so far. The two clubs acquired new coaches during the summer which have seemed to bear fruit early on with optimism at saturated levels. Injuries though are part and parcel of the game and Espanyol's depth may be tested here with key men David Garcia, Ivan De la Pena and Rufete all doubts for this encounter. In better news, former Liverpool man Steve Finnan is in line for his La Liga debut. Getafe also have injuries to contend with as they try and keep their undefeated record intact. First choice goalkeepers, Argentineans Roberto Abbondanzieri and Oscar Ustari, are expected to miss out this evening.

Verdict: This match seems to have draw written all over it between two evenly matched teams. Both have had a fairly strong start to the season and although Espanyol are the only team with two wins to their name, they will be given a good battle by Getafe. The away team will be looking for a minimum of a point to ensure that the current 2 point gap between the two sides is not stretched any further.

Pick: Getafe +0.5 Asn Hcp.
Espanyol 1 - 1 Getafe

Sunday, 21st September
Real Sporting de Gijon v Barcelona

Summary: Barca are desperate for a win here against the bottom placed Real Sporting de Gijon. Following two dissapointing results in La Liga, a 1-0 defeat at Numancia and 1-1 draw against Racing at the Nou Camp, Barcelona showed some of their true self midweek with a fine 3-1 win over Sporting Lisbon. Henry is ruled out through illness but Guardiola will have from Eto'o, Messi and Krkic to choose from. A defeat here and Barcelona would of had their worst start to a season in 35 years!

Pick: OVER 2.5 goals
Sporting Gijon 1 - 6 Barcelona

Real Racing Club Santander v Real Madrid

Summary: Racing have been impressive so far this season but have had only two points to show for it. 1-1 draws against more fancied opposition, Sevilla and Barcelona, is not bad and will ensure that they will be in a confident mood for this encounter. Real Madrid have fallen victim to their own supporters after some poor recent performances despite winning. Their 4-3 win in La Liga against Numancia and 2-0 win against BATE Borisov in the Champions League were met with a chorus of boos from their own supporters. Sneijder and Gago are likely to miss for Real whereas Racing manager, Juan Ramon Muniz, should have a full compliment of players to choose from.

Pick: OVER 2.5 goals
Racing Santander 0 - 2 Real Madrid

La Liga 08/09 Season Preview

Still basking in the glory of winning the 2008 UEFA European Championships, the Spanish are about to grace the world football scene again with the start of the 2008/2009 La Liga season, kicking off on August the 30th. We provide our pearls of wisdom on just who are the contenders and the pretenders for the much anticipated season ahead.

Real Madrid will begin the season as the reigning champions who won the previous campaign with an eight point gap and relative ease despite a few minor hiccups towards the end of the season which gave a sniff of hope to their main challengers, Villarreal and Barcelona.
The Los Meringues have been extremely quiet in the transfer market as they look to retain their title. The most significant addition to Bernd Schuster’s champion side in his second season in charge at the Bernabeu is Dutch playmaker Rafael van der Vaart. Rafael will be looking to make an immediate impact by looking to cement a successful partnership with fellow Dutchman, Ruud Van Nistlerooy. Despite all the hype around Cristiano Ronaldo making the move from Old Trafford to the Bernabeu, this is looking highly unlikely and the Spanish champions will have to embark on the new season without him. Real Madrid will start the new season however with three players from Spain’s recent European Championship adventure as Ruben de la Red will return to Madrid from a loan spell at Getafe to join fellow European champions Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos.

The amount of change at local rivals and key challengers Barcelona has been enormous. Following the replacement of Frank Rijkaard at the helm with former player and local favourite, Pep Guardiola, the Nou Camp has been rejuvenated from top to bottom. Guardiola has wasted no time in making his mark by lowering the average age of the squad considerably with the removal of veteran Lilian Thuram and Gianluca Zambrotta, Edmilson and Deco, all within the over 30’s club. Ronaldinho also departs the Nou Camp as he seeks to resurrect his career in the comfort of the much slower paced Serie A. Notable additions, Daniel Alves from Sevilla (30 mill. Euros) and the very quick Arsenal winger Alexander Hleb are sure to add some much needed excitement to the atmosphere in the Nou Camp this season. Guardiola has also made it clear that striker Samuel Eto’o is definitely in his plans for the new season which will mean no new forwards will be required for now.

Los Meringues will definitely be the side to beat at the top in the new season with Barcelona and Villarreal looking to put up a real fight to come close to them. Atletico Madrid, who have been by far the busiest side in the transfer market, will be keen to put up a fight in their first Champions League campaign for a long time. They will also be on the shortlist to make an impact. Of the newcomers however, Malaga seem the only addition to be capable of avoiding the immediate drop.

We look forward to an exciting new season in La Liga and updating you on selected key matches throughout the campaign.
